I met my friend Daisuke in london in like 98 or something. He spoke about 5 words of English back then. We skated together and spent a lot of time hanging out and having fun. Now Daisuke is back in Japan and making music his band are called WAZAN, I don't know if that means something in Japanese but I like the name. Daisuke asked me to make the album cover. I sent him the drawing of my friend Carine Charaire and then Daisuke did the rest.

I finally started painting again after a long period of longing to paint and not having space or time. I am beginning this new series of paintings with a portrait of Bina Znamirowski.
Since I painted the portrait of Yukihiro Takahashi back in January I have been really inspired to stick with the same technique and create a show in the same style. The next series will be portraits of people with unpronouncable names or maybe just portraits of women. I realized during my last show that I was paying a lot of attention to guys....(?)
As to when and where this show will be I have absolutely no clue. I'm still working on the painting of Bina and really it takes a long time to get the painting exactly as I want it. It's probably going to speed up as I get to grips with these techniques again but right now I'm like looking at a 2010 deadline...

Heroin Skateboards graphics

Well here I found the original drawing of the black coffee graphic I made for the first series of Heroin Skateboards back in......99? Yeah, I think so cos I made the drawings on green paper in Tokyo. The tree man drawing was kind of inspired by Toby Shuall who was starting his brand of Suburban Bliss. Toby was drawing this character that was all tree like and alien eyes, he was really into foliage and 'plants' (especially the ones with pretty leaves...). Well anyway it never got turned into anything other than an archived drawing in a folder in a cupboard.
The drawing of Eva I made a while after but its more or less the same style. The other two drawings were entirely imaginary, I mean that I didnt use any reference material or models... just straight out of me head like.

For anyone whos interested (Chas) I'm gonna start to put up some old photos and paintings and whatever in the archives section of the blog. Don't expect anything very organized. I started with a few images of when I moved to Japan for a while in 99. This was a really exciting time for me and I started sifting through old photos of folks and places ( like this classic photo of the ladyman near Shibamata). I'll try and get some stuff of London and Manchester up there too. If your lucky there will even be some shots of Burnley and Rochdale!

THE WHISTLE TEST
The Whistle Test is a multi-media group show spotlighting a panel of European artists that are all innovators in their respected fields. Moreover, as the boundaries between art and commerce become not merely blurred but sometimes complimentary, these transversal artists share the same capacity to glide between contrasting projects.

The name of this exhibition refers to the cult 1970s British TV program entitled ‘The Old Grey Whistle Test’, which served as a platform for emerging singer-songwriters, such as David Bowie and John Lennon. Its title stemmed from an expression used at London’s music publishing houses; according to this jokey phrase, a new record was deemed successful if the grey-suited doormen could whistle the tune after hearing it only once.

Similarly, the ‘Whistle Test’ exhibition features the artists that are sculpting Europe’s contemporary cultural landscape. It includes Eley Kishimoto, the London fashion duo reputed for its pattern designs applied to clothing, accessories and interior decoration. Laurent Fetis, the French graphic designer is credited not just for his commercial work but also as an artist by the gallery world. Meanwhile, André, the Parisian graffiti artist-cum-nightclub owner famous for his colorful ‘Love Graffiti’ commissions, is juxtaposed with Delta, the Dutch graffiti artist reputed for his free-form style of painted architectural imagery. ‘ICouldNeverBeADancer’ is a choreography partnership whose hip-hop aesthetics remain informed by contemporary art, design and fashion.

Visual artists Davide Bertocchi and Marke Newton both reference music in their work but in startlingly different ways. While Bertocchi’s ‘Evil Molecula’ sculpture uses vinyl records of satanic music to illustrate constructivist ideas, Newton’s portraits pay homage to the aesthetics of rock music from his formative years. Kolkoz creates transmogrified realities, such as their series of copied drawings reminiscent of the game Chinese whispers. Finally, Mrzyk & Moriceau’s ‘Looping’ is a mesmerizing video animation: an infinite trip through their psychedelic landscape.

"Urban Calligraphy"

“It all started for me with handwriting, writing was my first introduction to art ! Urban Calligraphy. Style was handed down by urban-legends such as BAN 2, MACKIE, RASTA, ZEPHYR, MINONE, OE3. Trains provided the ultimate black-board for the style to progress and be seen. Ink was the medium of choice for bombing. Markers where made of empty beer bottles and eraser pads.
And with dish-washing gloves you would apply pints of either Flow-Master, leather dye or stamping ink in one night on trains. I remember coming out of the yards and my arm would be hurting from taking so many tags. How can i describe the pleasure i would feel after bombing a yard. That satisfaction, like a fat cat raiding a garbage can.

Only those who would read the writing on the trains could start to understand and decipher the beauty of it all. It took me over 20 years of reflection to come back to this, from looking at asian and arabic calligraphy, and seeing how it plays in the lives of these cultures.I feel the time is now. More than ever for our society to look at art… and see the beauty in this form of calligraphy as an art in itself".

Looning around in Heerlen Holland for a week during the culturanova festival in August 2005. The permanent wall painting was comissioned by the local government of Heerlen in collaboration with culturanova and Stijn Huijts director of het Domein museum of Sittard Netherlands. Other Artist included the Osgemeos from Brazil.

my first apartment in Japan

This apartment had its very own power station and carpark and train station, it was incredible. Having never really lived this close to cars and electricity and major forms of transportation before i really had a fun time adjusting. This apartment on the ground floor was more like a box than a room. The frist day I arrived the place was not furnished so i spent the first night on the floor or on my backpack or something I dont remember, I do remember awakening to my very first earthquake in the morning though. This was a great introduction to real Japanese life. No shibuya style fun in Kitakogane Chiba. This place was raw. I was like 30 minutes on foot from the nearest train station and 15 minutes walk from the closest food store. Life was hard during the war. I went from working in Slam City Skates one day to wearing a suit and commuting as a salary man the next. Not the best career choice I ever made. Did I ever have a career?
Here are a few photos of some of the skaters i used to hang out with in Matsudo city Chiba. The guy dropping in at the bowling alley was an amazing skater and was riding for the DLX distributor at the time. Hon-kun (the guy at the bottom) was a good friend to me, he didnt speak a word of english and my japanese was basic to say the least, still we had a good laugh together and everyone used to hang out and race in these really cool Lexus type cars and on suped up honda bikes. We drank a lot,played pool and bowled.

Chris had just got back from Japan with his band Orange Goblin and Henry was skating and studying whilst passing his saturdays at SLAM. Myself and Eric (The Viking) used to hang out and drink ale and consume quantities of Snus. Daisuke... what was Daisuke doing back then? He was pretty much styling hair and collecting vinyl and ...., well now he is a musician in Tokyo anyways. Finally Sun was always hanging out in SLAM or actually in Rough Trade buying strange electronica. He worked near seven dials in his parents musical instruments store. Sun was super negative and very funny, he bored everyone to death with his dryness.

This was my muji aluminium ass wallet from around 97. From the images I can tell it was not long after I got back from my first trip to Japan. Those sticker machines had just made there debut in London and we used to spend a lot of cash and time photographing ourselves. Paticularly like the Elvis combined with OM stickers.
As you can see my wallet was full of my friends and low on money, this was pretty much my life in London. Old photos of FOS with long hair, Kiki in bed with Afro, Mum, 'O'-san the crazy clubber from Osaka and some moody shots of me in a love hotel in shibuya where I spent a whole week as it was the cheapest hotel for two we could find (?)....
